Effect of melt-to-solid volume ratio and preheating temperature on Mg/Al bimetals interface by centrifugal casting

Compound casting is an efficient method for bonding dissimilar metals, in which a dramatic reaction can occur between the melt and solid. The centrifugal process, type of compound casting, was applied to cast Al/Mg bimetals. Magnesium poured at 700°C, with melt-to-solid volume ratios (Vm/Vs) 1.5 3, into preheated hollow aluminum cylinder. preheating temperatures solid part were 320, 400, 450°C, constant rotational speed 1,600 rpm. parts kept inside machine until reaching cooling temperature 150°C. result showed that increase from 320 450°C led enhanced layer thickness. In addition, Vm/Vs 3 resulted raising interface thickness 1.2 1.8 mm. Moreover, not continuously formed when selected. this case, force contraction overcame resultant acting on interface. An ratio examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), results demonstrated formation Al3Mg2, Al12Mg17 (δ+Al12Mg17) eutectic structures
